A naturalist believes that all reality is fundamentally material and all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes. There are many problems that come up in this theory but i will only name three of them. The first problem is spontaneous generation. Spontaneous generation is the theory that non-living matter gave rise to living organisms. This theory of spontaneous generation has been dis proven time and time again by scientists like Redi and Pasteur in the mid 1800's. However, that does not stop Secular Humanists from believing that it is true. Secular Humanists are quick to assume that the origin of life did not come from a supernatural force, but they haven't discovered how that could have happened. Even Charles Darwin admitted there having to have been some kind of supernatural force to begin the origin of life.
The next false explanation of life is the naturalistic belief of the survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest is the idea that the life forms that are best equipped to survive will win the struggle for existence. This theory would explain why living organisms have become better equipped to survive as time passes and also, it would explain the origin and development of species. One of the major problems with "survival of the fittest" is essentially in its name. That phrase directly implies that only the "fit" can survive. But who is to say what is "fit"? What is the definition of fit?
Lastly, the last problem with a naturalistic explanation of life is Neo-Darwinism. Neo Darwinism states that new species arise from natural selection acting over vast periods of time on chance genetic mutations in reproductively isolated population. The problem with this theory is the mutation aspect of it. When there are gene mutations, they have a negative affect on the organism and usually are crippling to the individual. There is no way that mutations could have helped advance the evolutionary process because if mutations have a negative affect, species would never advance but only become more and more hindered in their adaptation.
