Moral Law

“This law was called the Law of Nature because people thought that every one knew it by nature and did not need to be taught it” (C.S Lewis). C.S. Lewis talks about the Law of Human Nature in a good portion of his book. He uses this topic as a foundation for the text and he further expands on the issue. According to the writings of C.S. Lewis, in the book Mere Christianity, everyone has a type of “moral law” that is ingrained in us since the beginning of time. This moral law helps us to distinguish right from wrong, what is polite and impolite, and even just common courtesies that apply to all men.
Further examining if it is in fact true that everyone upholds these moral standards can a bit confusing. It is indeed true that all humans know that it is wrong to lie, cheat, and steal but, is this taught just to benefit society, or is there a higher power that embeds these laws into all of us? C.S. Lewis continues to argue that this law is not cultural, or based on where you are from, but that God put these ideas into the minds of all humans. Non Christians might argue that there is no moral law and that it does not exist at all. They might believe that we are taught what is right and wrong from the beginning by our parents or by those who most influence us. Is there, in fact, a universally held “Moral Law” that all humans sense?

  1. Lex- your essay is really good. I like the way you used quotes in the first paragraph to backup your facts. your essay is really strong my only suggestion would be to work on the combination of a few sentences to make the flow better. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with as the answer to your question.

  4. First off, I like your topic. You have a lot of good information in here. Good job using quotes from the book. Good hook at the begining. I'm really interesting in what you find on this subject. The only think you need to work on is word choice in a few places and sentence flow. Other than that good job. :)
